*** Pit Expanding with New Oxnard Location *** 2012 Baltimore National *** New LeBron & Trout

8/13/2012: UPCOMING IPOs ThePit is back from the 2012 National Sports Collectors Convention in Baltimore, where we met with some of the top rookie card dealers in the hobby. Our focus, as always, was explaining how dealers can benefit from thePit's strong user base, efficient storage & shipping services, and low fees to maximize their sales efforts. When dealers understand the many benefits of listing their cards on thePit instead of eBay, they realize that they can charge less on thePit and still make more money than on eBay. This, of course, also leads to satisfied Pit buyers. Most of the cards listed below are sourced from dealers who are listing additional items after success with earlier listings. ACTIVE LINKS AND MORE INFORMATION COMING SOON.

Andrew Luck 2012 Leaf Valiant BGS 10Two other Luck cards have traded actively on thePit, and now we add our first graded offering of the #1 draft pick. Luck played very well in his first pre-season game for the Colts, and expectations are high that he will be a worthy successor to Peyton Manning.

Bryce Harper 2011 Topps Heritage Minors BGS 9.5Better than any other Harper card I've seen, this one captures the essence of his legendary power, as it shows him with his arms fully cocked to begin another tremendous swing. Produced in the classic 1962 Topps style, this is one of the most attractive and popular cards of the phenomenal young talent.

Bryce Harper 2011 Bowman Prospects BGS 9.5

Bryce Harper 2011 Bowman's Best BGS 9.5

Yu Darvish 2009 Bowman Chrome WBC BGS 9.5Darvish is among the league leaders in Wins and Strikeouts in his rookie season, and he figues to gain additional exposure during the playoffs. This World Baseball Championships card has been one of the most actively traded offerings on thePit this season, and it is now offered in Gem Mint graded form for the first time.

Carlos Gonzalez 2005 Bowman Chrome BGS 9.5His Colorado Rockies are struggling, but Gonzalez is quietly adding another excellent season to his impressive career resume. His OPS of .930 ranks seventh in the National League.

Kobe Bryant 1996 SP BGS 9.5 The PSA 10 grade of this card has been popular on thePit for many years, and we expect that this Beckett Gem Mint grade will also trade well. With the addition of Steve Nash and Dwight Howard to the Lakers, Kobe now has an excellent chance to match Michael Jordan with six championship rings.

Ken Griffey 1989 Donruss BGS 9.5 ThePit has long traded the PSA 9 grade of this card, but until now we did not have a Gem Mint listing. One of the things we noticed at the National Convention was that cards of the blue-chip modern athletes (esp. Jordan, Griffey, Jeter, Kobe and Brady) are extremely strong, and in some cases (e.g. MIKE-86-FLR-P9 and JETR-93-SP1-P9) have risen by 50% or more over the last 12 months. If that trend continues, investment-grade cards like this one may be pulled forward. Griffey is virtually certain to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2016.

John Smoltz 1989 Upper Deck BGS 9.5 Smoltz is eligible for the Hall of Fame in 2015, and a strong case can be made for the only pitcher in Major League history to record both 200 Wins and 150 Saves.

Bo Jackson 1989 Score Supplemental BGS 9.5 The picture says it all, and reminds us that there was a time when two-sport star Bo Jackson, not Michael Jordan, was the most famous and idolized athlete in America. Due to the injuries which ended his careers prematurely, Bo won't be making any acceptance speeches in Canton or Cooperstown. But any sports fan of the late '80s has to have a spot for Bo in his personal Hall of Fame.

Dwight Gooden 1984 Topps Traded BGS 9.5 In 1984 Gooden was the most dominating 19-year-old pitcher in baseball history, striking out 276 batters in 218 innings. The following year, 1985, he was the best 20-year-old pitcher in baseball history, winning the Cy Young Award for his 24-4 record and astounding 1.53 ERA. Gooden's meteoric success in New York, his role on the 1986 World Series Championship team, and the unparalleled achievements at the start of his career are the stuff of legends that will be passed down through generations of baseball fans.

6/21/2012: ThePit is consolidating its operations in the coastal California city of Oxnard. With the addition of many IPOs in recent months, and the expectation of many to follow, the management of thePit has determined that we can best meet our customers' needs by increasing our staffing and centralizing all of our activities north of Los Angeles. A modern warehouse and office facility in Oxnard has been prepared for the last several months, and thePit's inventory will be fully transferred to the new location by July 4th. Incoming packages, deposits and correspondence sent after July 1st can be addressed to:

P.O. Box 2120
Oxnard, CA 93034
Tel: (805) 485-5700
email: customer.service@thepit.com

If you accidentally send a package to us in LA after the move, don't fear -- our friends at Sportsbuy/Naxcom maintain an active business in our previous office space, and they will forward on the package to Oxnard as soon as they can. The new location will allow us to operate thePit more efficiently, while providing all the safeguards (full insurance policy, alarmed facility, PO Box) necessary to protect our members' items as we have for over 12 years. An additional notice about thePit's new location will be emailed to members in the next week.

ThePit's move to Oxnard also completes the transition period following thePit.com's sale by Naxcom Inc. to BidAsk247 LLC. Because we have managed to retain thePit's superior customer service team, the transition has been smooth -- and probably invisible to the majority of our users.

6/21/2012: ThePit will be actively buying at the National Sports Collectors Convention in Baltimore (August 1-5), but the exchange will remain open and shipping fulfillment will continue as usual during the week. If you are in Baltimore for the Convention, please keep an eye out for Mark Humphries (General Manager) and Frank Lewandowski (Operations Manager) roaming the floor looking for new items to add to thePit.

6/21/2012: Two cards are being offered on thePit for the first time this week:

LeBron James 2004 Upper Deck Naxcom Promo Uncirculated/Encased

Jonathan Papelbon 2003 Bowman Chrome Draft #51 PSA 10
Jonathan Papelbon 2003 Bowman Chrome Draft #51 PSA 9

Trevor Bauer is one of the most intriguing pitching prospects in recent years. Start with the fact that he was the #3 overall pick in last year's draft, following an outstanding college career at UCLA where he set school records for career wins and strikeouts, and he led NCAA Division I in K's in each of his final two years. But Bauer is more than just another top pitching prospect with mid-90s heat. He's also an intense student of the game whose unusual pregame routines (including long-tossing 400 feet from foul pole to foul pole), innovative new pitches, and unorthodox pitching mechanics are likely to draw considerable attention during the 2012 season. He has a legit chance to earn a spot in the Diamondbacks' starting rotation this year.

If Gary Brown continues to develop as he did in 2011, he could be exhibiting his blazing speed for San Francisco by the end of the season. Last year, Brown set a San Jose franchise record with 188 hits in the California League. He batted .336 with 13 triples, 14 homers and 53 stolen bases. Scouts see him as the Giants' future centerfielder and leadoff hitter.

Dylan Bundy was the #4 pick in the 2011 draft. According to Baseball America, "he pitches at 94-98 mph and touches 100 with his four-seamer, which features explosive life." In addition to being a great athlete with a golden arm, Bundy's "workouts are the stuff of Oklahoma legend" and some scouts considered him the equal of the college pitchers picked ahead of him in the draft (Gerrit Cole, Danny Hultzen and Trevor Bauer).

Yoenis Cespedes is expected to be the Oakland A's clean-up hitter on Opening Day. The Cuban defector hit his first big league homer in Oakland's 4-1 victory over Seattle in Tokyo on March 29th. Cespedes is fast and strong, with 6.5 second 60-yard-dash times allowing him to play center field, and raw power that grades as a "70" on the 20-80 scouting scale. In his final season in Cuba's top league, he hit .333/.424/.667 and tied the league record for home runs.

Next to Bryce Harper, Jurickson Profar may be the most exciting teenager in professional ball. The switch-hitting shortstop from Curacao "offers a rare combination of present five-tool ability and additional projection." (BA) Last year Profar was the MVP of the South Atlantic League, with a .390 on-base percentage as the youngest player in the circuit. The best pure hitter in the Texas Rangers' system, he's also "electrifying defensively, with plus range and arm strength." According to BA, "Profar has all the ingredients to be a future superstar."

Jacob Turner is competing for a starting job in the Tigers' 2012 rotation. Last year, he was the first high school pick from the 2009 draft to reach the majors. The 6'5" righty is "a prolific strike-thrower" who complements his low 90s fastball with a quality curve and changeup. Compared with Detroit's Rick Porcello, who won 14 games last year with the big league club, Turner has "better stuff and a brighter future." (BA)
